The front of this Murrieta house had been landscaped once, and that was the problem. At some point it was laid out with mulch beds, a scattering of river rock, a few shrubs, and a palm tree. Years passed and none of it aged well. The shrubs grew past their spot and started crowding the driveway. The mulch had broken down into a dull brown crust with weeds pushing up through it. The rocks had sunk into the dirt with grass sprouting between them. Nothing was dead exactly, but nothing looked cared for either.

The homeowner had made up their mind before we ever showed up. No more trimming, no more replanting, no more weekends spent maintaining a yard that never quite looked good anyway. They wanted green, they wanted it clean, and they wanted to stop thinking about it. Artificial turf was the answer, and it was the right call for this yard.

So we took the front apart. The overgrown bushes came out roots and all, the palm tree came out entirely, and the old mulch was scraped off and hauled away along with the rock that had settled into the soil. From there we dug the whole area down several inches. Turf laid over old dirt never sits right. It shifts, it dips, and every uneven spot underneath eventually shows on the surface.

Once we were down to solid ground, we built the yard back up in layers. Crushed base rock went in first, spread evenly and packed down until the ground was firm underfoot with a slight slope away from the house so water drains instead of collecting. Gopher wire went over the top of that, covering every inch of the yard. This step is not optional out here. Murrieta has plenty of gophers, and one tunneling under finished turf can push a section up into a lump you cannot flatten again without pulling the whole thing back up. The wire goes in once, costs very little, and saves the lawn.

Then came the turf itself. We rolled it out and let it sit in the sun first so the blades could relax and the creases from the roll could settle out. After that we cut it to the shape of the yard, seamed the pieces so the joins disappear, and nailed the perimeter tight along the driveway, the walkway, and the sidewalk. Every edge is a straight, clean line where the green meets the concrete. Along the side yard we ran it up the slope in one continuous piece, and around the utility box we cut it to fit so precisely that the lid still opens without a wrinkle in the surface.

Infill went in last, brushed down into the blades to weigh the turf and hold each blade standing upright. That is the difference between artificial grass that looks like a rug and artificial grass that looks like a lawn. We brushed the whole yard out, cleaned up the site, and left.

What the homeowner has now is a solid sheet of green from the porch to the sidewalk, the same shade in July as it is in January. No mowing. No sprinklers running before sunrise. No brown patch where the sun hits hardest. Pull up to the house on any day of the year and the yard looks like it was just finished, except nobody has to touch it.
