Narrow Grass Strip Rebuilt as a Drought Tolerant Rock Bed with a New Non-Invasive Tree and Shrubs in Murrieta
Pro Scape Landscaping Inc. of Riverside County, CA
The tree was what got us out to this Murrieta front yard. It stood in a narrow strip of lawn between two driveways, and it had been cut back hard more than once over the years. What was left was a heavy trunk that leaned toward the neighbor's side and split into two, with all the growth pushed up top and not much holding it together below. A tree that has been topped that many times never comes back as strong as it looks.
The roots were the bigger problem. A tree that size in a strip that narrow has nowhere to send roots except sideways, straight under the concrete on both sides. That is how driveways start cracking and lifting, and once it starts, no amount of trimming undoes it. The trunk was already pushing against the edge of the slab. Another few years and this stops being a tree removal and becomes a tree removal plus a new driveway, which is a very different bill.
The grass was not doing much better. That strip is the hardest spot in any front yard to keep alive. It is narrow, it sits between two slabs of concrete that hold heat all afternoon, and the sprinklers watering it throw half their spray onto the driveway. The homeowner was paying to water pavement, and in a Murrieta summer the grass still went thin and pale anyway.
So we cleared it out. The tree came down, the stump and root wood came out, and the grass was cut loose and stripped off in sections down to bare dirt. Everything left in one load. Then we shaped the strip and got it ready for what was going in next, which was not more lawn.
The homeowner wanted something that looked good without asking for anything, so we filled the bed with mixed river rock. Rock does not care how hot the concrete gets, it never needs water, and it keeps soil from washing onto the driveway. We used a blend of sizes and colors instead of one uniform stone, which keeps the bed from looking flat and picks up the brown and tan tones already on the house. Larger stones went along the edges to hold the line clean.
Then came the new tree, and this is the choice that decides whether the homeowner is back in the same spot in fifteen years. We planted a tall, narrow evergreen with roots that grow down and stay contained instead of running sideways under the concrete. That is the whole reason a tree can live between two driveways without eventually destroying them. It also grows upright and stays slim, so it adds real height out front and a green break between the two houses without ever spreading over the pavement. We set it, backfilled it, and staked it so it establishes straight.
To finish, we planted low water shrubs through the rock bed so there is green spread across the strip instead of just the one tree. They are spaced to fill in over the next couple of seasons and they break up the rock so the bed looks planted instead of dumped.
What the homeowner has now is a front strip that finally fits where it is. No lawn struggling between two hot driveways, no sprinklers running for grass that was never going to hold its color, and no roots working their way under the concrete. Just a clean rock bed, a young evergreen that grows up instead of out, and a section of yard that looks finished on the hottest day of the year without anyone touching it.
Not every yard problem announces itself. A tree looks fine until the driveway starts to lift, and a strip of grass looks harmless until you add up what you have spent watering it. If something in your yard has been nagging at you, that instinct is usually right, and it is worth getting a real answer on before the concrete makes the decision for you. Come to us with the problem, not the solution. We will walk the space, tell you what is actually going on, and lay out what could go there instead, whether that is river rock and gravel, drought tolerant planting, a new tree chosen for where it has to live, or some combination of the three. Then we build it with our own crew, start to finish. Pro Scape Landscaping Inc. is licensed and insured and works throughout Murrieta, Southwest Riverside County, and the Inland Empire.
